San Diego State’s focus every year at this time is basketball.

But the Aztecs are doing well in other sports, too:

• Sophomore Harry Takis won the individual championship and the 29th-ranked Aztecs placed second in the team scoring last week at the Southwestern Invitational men’s golf tournament in Westlake Village. The Aztecs shot an 846 to finish second to Pepperdine. USD tied for fifth at 858.

Takis shot a 67-66-70 for a 7-under 203 and a two-stroke victory. He was named the Mountain West Men’s Golfer of the Week. Aztecs Chanachon Chokprajakchat (72-72-71) and Kai Hirayama (71-70-74) tied for 20th at 215 and Tyler Kowack (Canyon Crest Academy), who won the Marquette Invitational last Oct. 5-7, finished 28th at 217.

USD’s You Seong Choi finished in a tie for sixth at 209 (68-69-72). USD’s Ian Maspat (Scripps Ranch High School) tied for 15th at 213 (70-66-77) and Torero Cooper Humphreys was tied for 25th at 216.

• A week after Aztecs sprinters and jumpers starred in the Dr. Martin King Indoor Track Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M., San Diego State distance runners turned in bests during a two-day indoor meet in Seattle.

Elliana Lomeli set the SDSU freshman mile record with a time of 4:48.29 during Saturday’s Mile City Meet. Samantha Wood posted the seventh-fastest mile time in Aztec history at 5:00.99 and Sara Jones had the ninth-best clocking in Aztec history at 5:01.76.

• San Diego State’s 19th-ranked women’s water polo team finished 2-2 in the Triton Invitational. The 16-team field included 13 of the nation’s top 25 teams.

• Aztec junior Isabella Gomez finished second Saturday in the platform competition at the Lumberjack Diving Invitational in Flagstaff, Ariz., after finishing fifth in the 3-meter springboard. Freshman Belen Cano finished sixth, sophomore Keira Kuderka (Carlsbad High School) was seventh and junior Alina Skrocki was eighth in platform and ninth in the 3-meter.

Division II basketball

Back-to-back home wins over Chaminade (77-52) and Fresno Pacific (69-54) last week have boosted the Point Loma Nazarene men’s basketball team (16-4, 11-3) into first place in the PacWest Conference.

Forward Andrew Nagy scored 29 points in the two wins, while forward Andrew Hommes had 28 points and 19 rebounds.

The Sea Lions women are tied for second (15-5, 11-3) in the PacWest after splitting at home with the same teams.

The PLNU women lost 68-65 to Fresno Pacific despite getting double-doubles from forwards Eiley Tippins (17 points, 11 rebounds) and Ruby Vlahov (17 points, 10 rebounds) and guard Hannah Golan (13 points, 12 rebounds).

• Cal State San Marcos’ Dexter Stratton (San Diego City College) had 34 points and 19 rebounds in two games and Keavie Love (SDCC) scored 31, but the Cougars’ men (10-9, 7-7) lost a pair of California Collegiate Athletic Association games at home. Sydney Hani totaled 31 points and 24 rebounds over two games and Kaity Haan had 24 points and 14 rebounds as the CSUSM women (7-12, 4-10) split a pair of home games.

JC basketball

MiraCosta College (22-0, 6-0) remained the only unbeaten juco women’s basketball team in California after defeating Palomar College (15-7, 6-1) at home in a battle for first in the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference.

On the men’s side, San Diego City College forward Dylan Griffin (University City High School) totaled 51 points and 30 rebounds in back-to-back wins over Mesa (90-60) and Grossmont (96-76) colleges. The Knights are now 17-5 overall and 10-0 in Pacific Coast Athletic Conference play.

Southwestern College (12-11, 8-3) is now second in the PCAC men’s standings, with Palomar (15-7, 7-3) third.

Softball

Cal State San Marcos and Palomar College both opened their seasons on winning notes.

The Cougars, who opened the season as the 14th-ranked team in Division II, went 4-1 over the weekend to win the Concordia Irvine Kickoff Classic for a second straight season. Jillian Albayati went 10-for-17 in the tournament with two home runs, a double and 10 RBIs. Zoe Karam had two doubles, a triple and five RBIs.

Meanwhile, Alexis Huey (Poway High School; 2-for-2, five RBIs) and Lauren Doepping (2-for-2, four RBIs) each homered and doubled as Palomar College opened with a 13-1 victory at Saddleback.

Baseball

CSUSM’s baseball team opened the season with a four-game sweep of the Colorado School of Mines. Leighton Helfrick and Jacob Embleton (Grossmont College) each had a home run and six RBIs in the series.
