Re “Let’s force change at City Hall” (Oct. 12): Among the “self-evident” truths listed in the Declaration of Independence is “that whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of [our life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness], it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its Foundation on such Principles, and organizing its Powers in such Form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness.”

The best change that “We the People” could force at City Hall would be to replace our strong mayor government with a city manager version that could focus on dramatically cutting spending, thereby bringing the city’s budget back into balance. In the meantime, I endorse the Union-Tribune Editorial Board’s proposed 2022 Restoration Act, to return city trash and parking fees to the levels seen that year. Count me in among the volunteers who will be needed to collect signatures for this initiative.
