A man from California died over the weekend after becoming unresponsive while snorkeling at Makena, according to Maui police.
The Maui Police Department has identified him as Frank Archuleta Jr., 69, of Huntington Beach, Calif.
Officers responded to an 11:45 a.m. call Saturday at Makena Landing after Archuleta was pulled unresponsive from the ocean, according to an MPD news release.
Archuleta had reportedly been snorkeling when he lost consciousness and was brought to shore by bystanders who immediately began lifesaving measures.
First responders took over upon arriving shortly after, but were unable to revive him.
Police said, based on a preliminary investigation, there are no signs of foul play. An autopsy has been scheduled to determine Archuleta’s exact cause of death.
