San Diego’s emergence as a premier soccer market will continue with an appearance in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

LA28 announced Tuesday morning that Snapdragon Stadium will be among the host sites for group stage and knockout matches.

Along with San Diego, New York, Columbus, Nashville, St. Louis and San Jose will welcome the 28 total teams that qualify for the men’s and women’s tournaments. Gold medal matches will take place at the Rose Bowl, with the men playing on July 28, followed a day later by the women’s title game.

The match schedule — which will include teams, dates and total matches for each site — will be announced at a later date. That information will be official before tickets go on sale in April.

Snapdragon opened in 2022 as the home of San Diego State and the NWSL’s San Diego Wave. Fueled by the presence of 2012 gold medalist Alex Morgan, the Wave set numerous attendance records.

In 2025, San Diego FC played its record-breaking MLS expansion season at Snapdragon, finishing fourth in the league in average attendance (28,064).

Snapdragon has hosted international soccer matches already in its short existence, including the Concacaf Men’s and Women’s Gold Cup.

Prior to Snapdragon’s construction, San Diego Stadium hosted numerous premiere sporting events, including three Super Bowls and two MLB All-Star Games, as well as international soccer competition.

Before Tuesday’s announcement the 2028 Olympic events nearest to San Diego were set to take place just north of Camp Pendleton. Lower Trestles Beach near San Clemente will host surfing.
