Human skull found in Goodwill donation in Washtenaw County; police seek woman who dropped it off

  • February 3, 2026

CHELSEA, Mich. – A human skull was donated to a Goodwill store in Washtenaw County last week, and police are looking to speak with the woman who dropped the item off.

On Monday, Jan. 26, 2026, an officer was dispatched to the Goodwill store in the 1100 block of S. Main Street in Chelsea after staff reported a “suspicious item” found in a donation drop-off.

The item appeared to be a human skull wrapped in a shirt, according to a police report.

The responding officer took possession of the skull, noting that there wasn’t any visible damage or “uncharacteristic holes” in it.

After that, the Chelsea Police Department turned the skull over to the medical examiner for further analysis. The investigation is ongoing.

Police are now trying to identify and speak with the woman who donated the item.

“One of the items appears to have been accidentally included in the donations,” the department said in a news release. “Chelsea PD would like to speak with her to confirm her decision.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact Chelsea Police Officer T. Gilbreath at 734-475-9122 or tgilbreath@chelseapd.org.
