Sacramento nonprofit to host community 5k for Black History Month
BUILDING GENERATIONAL HEALTH IN THE CAPITAL CITY THIS BLACK HISTORY MONTH, YOU CAN TAKE PART IN A COMMUNITY FIVE K TO PROMOTE HEALTHY LIFESTYLES AND SUPPORT A LOCAL NONPROFIT. AND JOINING US THIS MORNING FROM BLACK RUN SACRAMENTO, WE HAVE ROBERT, KATHY AND DOCTOR DEREK. THANK YOU BOTH SO MUCH FOR JOINING US THIS MORNING. THANKS FOR HAVING US. SO THIS IS A PRETTY COOL RUN. THIS IS OPEN TO EVERYBODY ISN’T IT? THAT’S CORRECT. YEAH. TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT JUST THE HISTORY. HOW DID THIS ALL GET UNDERWAY. SO WE STARTED IT FOUR YEARS AGO TO HONOR AHMAUD ARBERY, WHO WAS MURDERED AROUND THIS TIME ON FEBRUARY 23RD. SO WE ALWAYS HAVE IT AROUND THAT TIME. BUT WE WANTED TO MAKE SURE THAT WE HAVE A PLATFORM FOR THE COMMUNITY TO BEGIN THEIR HEALTH JOURNEY, CONTINUE THEIR HEALTH JOURNEY. AND SO WE’VE BEEN DOING THAT SINCE ABOUT FOUR YEARS AGO. YEAH. SO BLACK MEN RUN THE ALSO AS AN ORGANIZATION HAS ALSO JUST BEEN AROUND FOR QUITE SOME TIME. WHAT WAS THE ORIGINAL PURPOSE? WHY DID YOU FEEL COMPELLED TO TO JOIN? WELL, I FEEL COMPELLED TO JOIN. WELL, AS PART OF THE PURPOSE OF BLACK MEN RUN, IT WAS ABOUT ESSENTIALLY CREATING A GENERATIONAL HEALTH. AND IN MY CASE, MY HEALTH WAS STARTING TO DECLINE A LITTLE BIT. AND SO I NEEDED TO TO GET OUT AND FORTUNATELY, I CAME ACROSS THIS GROUP AND, YOU KNOW, GOT GOT FIT, GOT GOING. AND, YOU KNOW, FEELING MUCH BETTER THAN I USED TO. YEAH. ONE STEP AT A TIME. RIGHT. AND THIS FIVE K RUN. YEAH. IT’S OPEN TO EVERYBODY. ABSOLUTELY. VERY INCLUSIVE NONCOMPETITIVE EVENT. WE WANT FAMILIES TO COME OUT, HAVE A LITTLE COMPETITION. RIGHT. MAYBE SOME BRAGGING RIGHTS ARE THERE. BUT THIS ALSO DOES HELP SUPPORT ANOTHER GROUP. TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT MORE MORE ABOUT THAT. SURE. IT IS THE CAPITAL CITY BLACK NURSING ASSOCIATION, WHICH CHAMPIONS HEALTH EQUITY, PROMOTES COMMUNITY EMPOWERMENT AND PROVIDES SCHOLARSHIPS FOR NURSING STUDENTS. SO WHAT CAN FOLKS EXPECT WHEN THEY COME OUT ON RACE DAY SO THEY CAN EXPECT FUN? WE’RE GOING TO HAVE A DJ. WE’RE GOING TO HAVE REFRESHMENTS. WE’RE GOING TO HAVE RAFFLE PRIZES. WE ALSO HAVE A FITNESS VILLAGE. AND THE PURPOSE OF THAT FITNESS VILLAGE IS TO PROVIDE OPPORTUNITIES FOR PRIMARILY, BUT NOT EXCLUSIVELY, BIPOC AND FEMALE OWNED FITNESS ORGANIZATIONS TO SHARE THEIR SERVICES WITH THE COMMUNITY, BUT ALSO GIVE THE COMMUNITY MULTIPLE OPTIONS IN TERMS OF THEIR FITNESS, BEYOND RUNNING OR WALKING. OKAY, AND BIPOC, BLACK INDIGENOUS PEOPLE OF COLOR. VERY NICE. AND OKAY, SO IT’S NOT TOO LATE TO REGISTER. THERE’S STILL PLENTY OF TIME, RIGHT? YES. WHERE SHOULD FOLKS GO? THEY CAN GO TO OUR INSTAGRAM SITE. THERE’S PLENTY OF INFORMATION ABOUT IT ON THERE. IT’S AT BLACK MEN RUN. BLACK MEN RUN. SAC IS OUR INSTAGRAM HANDLE. ALL RIGHT, GENTLEMEN, THANKS SO MUCH FOR JOINING US THIS MORNING. REALLY APPRECIATE HAVING YOU. AND AGAIN THAT FIVE K HAPPENS FEBRUARY 21ST.
