FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) — On Tuesday, prosecutors revealed new evidence in the case of a rollerblading gunman accused of a West Central Fresno murder nearly four years ago.
“You’re the driver of a vehicle that was involved in a murder,” Fresno Police Detective Ryan Rockwell is heard telling Alejandra Munoz during a recorded interview.
“Alejandra, I’m going to let you know right now that’s not what the video shows,” Rockwell said. “I know what you just told us is not completely truthful.”
Munoz and Guillermo Perez are on trial, each charged with murder for the death of Richard Martin outside the FreshCo Foods at Shields and Brawley Avenue.
The 70-year-old died in his car, police say, shot to death by a man on roller blades.
“A person on roller skates, roller blades comes out of your car and starts rolling around the parking lot,” Rockwell told Munoz.
Investigators believe the gunman came from Munoz’s car, but she refused to answer who was with her.
“We have to know who that person on roller blades was,” Rockwell said.
The recorded interview played for an hour. As police highlighted Munoz’s inconsistencies, the jury saw her frustration in real time.
“I have something very important to say,” Rockwell said amid crosstalk with Munoz. “Would you listen to me instead of talking over me, please?”
Munoz eventually walked out of the interview room after saying she needed an interpreter.
“Albeit she had a thick accent, she understood,” Rockwell testified on Tuesday.
Rockwell believes Munoz traced the FreshCo parking lot before the shooting.
Munoz’s attorney pushed back.
“Did you establish that she painted virtually every store in that shopping center?” defense attorney Mark Coleman said.
“I don’t know about every store, but she did, in the interview you just watched, I believe she referred to painting at the FreshCo,” Rockwell said.
Investigators say the motive centers around a civil lawsuit. At the time of his death, the victim had recently settled a case against his previous employer, who had connections to Munoz.
The jury heard from that employer last week and will now hear more evidence in the days ahead.
