Billboards supporting U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement crackdowns that have popped up in San Francisco’s Embarcadero are drawing some outrage as football fans descend on the Bay Area.
The digital billboards capitalize on the football theme with one of the advertisements depicting an ICE agent holding a trophy as “Defensive Player of the Year.”
Another ad shows ICE agents in front of a border wall with the message: “Cheering because the home team started investing in defense.”
The ads are being paid for by a group called American Sovereignty.
Some visitors and locals are calling the ads sickening.
“I’m from Mexican descent. I’m first generation here. So seeing this kind of stuff here, that breaks my heart,” tourist Rosa Chavarria said. “Do you think I feel welcome to when it comes to that? Although I’m an American citizen, no I do not. It breaks my heart.”
San Francisco Supervisor Danny Sauter, who represents the Embarcadero district, calls the billboards pathetic.
NBC Bay Area reached out to American Sovereignty on Tuesday and did not hear back.
