A U.S. marshal and a suspect were shot and wounded Tuesday morning, Oct. 21, during a traffic stop in South Los Angeles, according to the Department of Homeland Security.
The shooting was reported about 8:50 a.m. in the 400 block of East 20th Street, according to Officer Luis Alanis, a spokesperson for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
ICE officers and U.S. marshals pulled over an “illegal alien” who had “previously escaped from custody,” in a targeted traffic stop, Tricia McLaughlin, assistant secretary for public affairs of the Department of Homeland Security, said in a statement.
The suspect rammed his car into law enforcement vehicles and tried to flee, McLaughlin said.
Officers fired weapons and hit the suspect in the elbow, she said, with the marshal getting hit in the hand by a ricocheting bullet.
Both the officer and suspect are in a hospital.
Los Angeles police officers were “providing outer perimeter traffic control at the scene of a federal investigation,” according to a post by the department on social media. No LAPD officer was otherwise involved in the operation, LAPD said.
