WASHINGTON (TNND) — A Supreme Court decision issued on Wednesday will allow California to use a new congressional map approved by California voters. The court’s decision is a major victory for Democrats ahead of the midterm elections.

This decision came after California Republicans asked the court to block the state’s redrawn congressional district lines, alleging the map was racially gerrymandered. The court offered no explanation or dissent.

The congressional map, drawn by California Democrats and passed in November by California voters, allows the Democratic Party to pick up as many as five House seats this fall.

California’s Gov. Gavin Newsom led the redistricting push, saying it was a response to the new congressional map enacted in Texas. Texas’ map could give Republicans up to five seats in the House as well.

A federal district court ruled in January to refuse to block California’s new congressional map. The district court found that the lines were drawn on a partisan, not a racial, basis, as the GOP argued.
