Fleet Science Center’s Two Scientists Walk Into a Bar series does exactly what the name promises – puts local scientists in bars where anyone can show up, grab a drink, and have actual conversations about their work.
No lectures, no PowerPoints, just researchers talking about what they do in a setting where asking questions feels natural instead of awkward. Throughout February, the series hits seven different locations across San Diego County, covering everything from Oceanography to Nuclear Fusion.
Science Meets Social Life
The whole concept works because it removes the formality that usually surrounds scientific discussions. After work, you can walk into a local bar and meet researchers from all types of fields who are there specifically to talk about their work.
Ask about intriguing topics, dive into questions you’ve been wondering about, or just listen while nursing a beer. It’s the kind of community event that makes science accessible without dumbing it down.
With events at different bars throughout the month, you can pick locations and topics that work for you. Science is already in your everyday life – this just makes it part of your social life too.

February’s Full Lineup
The series kicks off on February 5 with two simultaneous events. Pure Project Brewing North Park hosts scientists discussing Science Education and Crime Science at 6 PM, while 619 Spirits features experts in Oceanography and Particle Physics, also at 6 PM.

Access Without the Formality
What sounds like the beginning of a bad joke – two scientists walk into a bar – is actually a smart way to bridge the gap between research and the rest of us. Scientists spend their days working on things that affect our lives, but we rarely get the chance to just talk to them about it.
This series creates that space, and doing it in bars instead of lecture halls changes the entire dynamic.
You don’t need a science background to participate. You just need curiosity and the willingness to show up. Pick a topic that intrigues you, find a convenient location, and spend an evening learning from people who live and breathe this stuff.
