FRESNO, Calif. (FOX26) — A local business owner says he’s leaving Fresno because of unattended crime and homelessness.

Just two weeks ago, we interviewed him, and he told us he’d been attacked and his building vandalized, which was costing him money he did not have.

He said the city wasn’t doing enough.

One city council member says the city actually jumped into action and has already made swift changes.

“I’ve closed shop completely and I’m moving out of Fresno,” said Camoron Phillips. “I don’t feel safe here.”

Phillips grew up here. Since 2023 he’s run a tattoo shop in northwest Fresno.

But business soured recently because of ongoing issues with homelessness and crime.

He says he doesn’t feel safe.

“I’ve had my life threatened on several different occasions,” said Phillips.

He’s angry with City Hall and the police.

“The inadequacy of the Fresno Police Department and the negligence in not handling those calls for service and not using the penal code system to put it into effect in order to protect me as a citizen, as a business owner,” said Phillips.

Fresno City Councilman Mike Karbassi says the city and police are taking those calls for service quickly and seriously.

“What I can tell you is it’s not true,” said Karabassi. “The moment that we were informed about this, we got on the phone with PD, with the heart team. It took a little bit of time, but we actually cleared out the encampment under the BNSF Overpass at Polk and Herndon last Friday. And I went out there today, and it’s still fairly clear.”

Phillips said, “I want to make it very clear that I am supportive of police and I’m supportive of the police department in general but what I can say is from my experience here and the things that have happened to me is there’s been a huge negligence and inadequacy in their response to what’s happening regardless of what is politically happening up in Sacramento.”

“We take this extremely seriously, and we spring into action, and we’re gonna do it all across the city,” said Karabassi.

But that’s not enough for Phillips.

“I’m getting out of here and I’m taking my business with me and I’m going to pay taxes somewhere else where they appreciate me and where they take care of me and they support me,” said Phillips.

Councilmember Karbassi wants to remind business owners and anyone, really, if you see problems with crime or areas of the city that need attention, call 3-1-1 or use the FresGO App.
