FRESNO, Calif. (FOX26) — A man was hit and killed on Highway 99 near the Herndon Avenue exit in Fresno on Thursday morning.

According to the California Highway Patrol, an adult male pedestrian, believed to be in his late 20s or early 30s, attempted to cross the highway from the east shoulder of the northbound lanes toward the center median.

The driver of a pickup traveling in the far right lane saw the pedestrian run directly in front of him, but was unable to avoid hitting the man.

The pedestrian was thrown into the grassy area off the right shoulder of the highway.

Emergency crews arrived within minutes and attempted life-saving efforts, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the truck is cooperating with authorities, and CHP confirmed that alcohol and drugs are not considered factors in the incident.
