Waymo announced its test drive expansion was authorized in the Sacramento region back in November.

“As California’s capital and a growing center for progress, Sacramento’s spirit of innovation makes it the perfect next step for our expansion. We are eager to bring the future of mobility to this vibrant community, connecting its historic landmarks with its modern neighborhoods,” Waymo officials said.
The company said that it will be manually driving a fleet of all-electric Jaguar I-PACE vehicles around Sacramento. This phase allows the Waymo Driver familiarize itself with Sacramento’s tree-lined avenues and busy downtown corridors.
According to Waymo officials, they aim to work closely with state and city leaders to ensure the service meets the needs of Sacramento’s community and visitors.
“As Sacramento grows, so does our need for safe, reliable transportation,” Sacramento Mayor Kevin McCarty said. “We’re excited to work with Waymo to expand mobility options that are designed with safety at their core. By offering new ways to move around the Capital City, we’re providing our residents with more choice while staying focused on our goal of making every street safer for everyone.”
Waymo said that the expansion aligns with Sacramento’s “Vision Zero” goals that aim to eliminate traffic fatalities and serious injuries.
