New Leadership at Highlands Charter

Highlands Community Charter School and Technical Schools opened in 2014 as a place to help adult students learn English, earn a high school diploma or learn a trade. But the fate of the school is now in question, following a scathing state audit last year. Which found Highlands misspent public school funds to the tune of $180 million. Earlier this week, we talked to former ABC 10 reporter Andie Judson, whose investigation into Highlands The Wild West of Education, revealed a host of issues at the school and led to the state’s audit. She recapped her yearslong investigation, which you can listen to here. Today we will focus on what comes next. Despite new leadership and a host of changes the school has said it has taken to address the audit, the Twin Rivers School Board voted last week to revoke the school’s charter. While that doesn’t mean the end of Highlands just yet, their path forward is as unclear as ever. Highlands’ Executive Director Jonathan Raymond and former student Dolly Hunt joined us to talk about the school’s future and what the impact its potential closure could have on its students.

UC Berkeley Data Program for Female Athletes’ Health

Women’s sports are in the spotlight, from the popularity of the WNBA and NWSL, to growing attention around Women’s March Madness. But when it comes to treating injuries and supporting female athletes throughout different stages of their lives, care continues to lag behind their male counterparts. A new program at UC Berkeley called the Women’s Health and Performance Initiative aims to gather more data, develop new models and tailor information specifically to improve the health of female athletes. Former Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano is the founder of the UC Berkeley Institute for Security and Governance which is leading the new program. And Dr. Cassandra Lee, Chief of Orthopedic Sports Medicine at UC Davis Health talks about her experiences treating female athletes, and how new data can help improve health outcomes both on and off the field.
