FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) — A woman who was hospitalized from the tragic 17-vehicle pile-up on Highway 99 in Fresno has died from her injuries.

The California Highway Patrol confirms that the woman was in the car of the first victim, 61-year-old Gustavo Villanueva Vargas of Fresno.

A verified GoFundMe for the family identifies the woman as their grandmother, Gloria Rodriguez, and says the family was on their way to church.

Vargas was killed when he got out of the car during the pile-up.

It all happened on January 11 when a sudden, thick patch of fog overtook the southbound lanes of the highway, temporarily blinding some drivers.

The GoFundMe states Rodriguez died three days after the crash.

It says Vargas’ wife remains hospitalized after falling 40-feet during the incident and a cousin is also recovering in the hospital.
