FRESNO, Calif. (FOX26) — A 17-year-old boy was hit and killed on Highway 99 near the Herndon Avenue exit in Fresno on Thursday morning.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the teen attempted to cross the highway from the east shoulder of the northbound lanes toward the center median.

The driver of a pickup traveling in the far right lane saw the pedestrian run directly in front of him, but was unable to avoid hitting him.

The pedestrian was thrown into the grassy area off the right shoulder of the highway.

Emergency crews arrived within minutes and attempted life-saving efforts, but the boy was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the truck is cooperating with authorities, and CHP confirmed that alcohol and drugs are not considered factors in the incident.

Alcohol or drugs are not believed to be factors in this collision.

“This is an incredibly tragic loss, especially involving someone so young,” said Commander, Captain Ian Holguin. “Freeways are designed for high-speed vehicle travel and leave drivers with little to no time to react to unexpected hazards. Pedestrians on freeways are at extreme risk. If you see someone walking along or attempting to cross a freeway, please call 9-1-1 immediately so officers can respond before a tragedy occurs.”
