2026 Milan Cortina Olympics: The hometowns for Team USA’s California athletes
EXPRESS THEMSELVES IN A MANNER THAT IS BOTH CIVIL AND SAFE. WE ARE OFFICIALLY A WEEK AWAY FROM THE 2026 MILAN-CORTINA OLYMPIC GAMES, AND WE ARE GOING TO HAVE LIVE COVERAGE LEADING UP TO AND ALL THROUGHOUT THE GAMES. SO RIGHT NOW, OUR VERY OWN GOLD MEDAL OLYMPIC TEAM OF DEIRDRE FITZPATRICK AND PHOTOJOURNALIST MIKE DOWNEY ARE GETTING READY TO KICK START THEIR TRIP TO ITALY. I THINK THEY’RE FLYING OUT TODAY. YES, THE TWO HAVE COVERED EVERY OLYMPIC GAMES FOR KCRA 3 AND HEARST TELEVISION ACROSS THE COUNTRY SINCE THE 2000 SUMMER GAMES IN SYDNEY, THEY’VE BEEN TO A FEW, EXCEPT FOR THE POST COVID BEIJING GAMES. NOW JOINING US LIVE FROM SAC INTERNATIONAL USC, YOU’RE HEADING OUT TODAY I KNEW IT. ARE YOU GUYS EXCITED? I WAS GOING TO SAY, WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN? WE’RE FLYING OUT NOW. YES, WE ARE VERY EXCITED. AND IT’S FUN TO KIND OF JUST GET THIS GOING BECAUSE AS YOU GUYS KNOW, THIS IS LIKE SOMETHING WE’VE BEEN WORKING ON. IT’S BEEN AN ORDEAL. IT’S BEEN LIKE AN ORDEAL. THERE’S JUST. YEAH, I MEAN LIKE THE LAST SIX MONTHS WE’VE BEEN KIND OF PREPPING. AND I MEAN, THE GOOD NEWS IS WE HAVE SO MANY GREAT LOCAL ATHLETES, AT LEAST 19 ATHLETES THAT WE’RE TRACKING FROM CALIFORNIA, HEADING OVER TO MILAN-CORTINA ALL OF OUR ALPINE SKIERS. I CAN’T WAIT. I CAN’T WAIT TO SEE SO MANY GREAT ALPINE SKIERS. YOU GUYS WERE TALKING ABOUT THE FACT THAT THIS IS NOT OUR FIRST RODEO. SO I DID FIRE UP THE WAYBACK TIME MACHINE FOR YOU HERE. THIS IS THE 2006 TORINO OLYMPICS. THERE’S MY FRIEND MIKE DONNER LAKE AND ALL OF HIS, LIKE, PACKING THAT HE DID BACK IN 2006. AND OF COURSE, YOU KNOW, I MEAN, WE’RE TALKING ALMOST 20 YEARS. SO HERE’S ONE FOR YOU. 20 YEARS AGO, HEADING TO TORINO, I HAD A THREE MONTH OLD BABY. AND THAT IS THE PICTURE OF THE BABY ACTUALLY COMING OVER THERE AT THE VERY END OF THE OLYMPICS. THAT BABY NOW IS 20. AND GUYS, YESTERDAY I GAVE HIM THE MAKE GOOD CHOICES LECTURE AT HIS COLLEGE. AS YOU DO. THINGS HAVE CHANGED, DEFINITELY. BUT THE ONE THING THAT HAS NOT CHANGED IS THE EXCITEMENT THAT WE HAVE FOR THIS ASSIGNMENT. WE’RE REALLY GRATEFUL TO HEARST TELEVISION FOR SENDING US ONCE AGAIN, ONE MORE TIME, ONE MORE TIME. NUMBER 12. THIS IS 12. AS TOMMY ALWAYS SAYS, ONE MORE TIME AND YOU KNOW WHERE WE ARE. AS EXCITED AS WE WERE 25 YEARS AGO WHEN WE STARTED DOING THIS AS A TEAM, I THINK WE ARE THE LONGEST SERVING REPORTER PHOTOGRAPHER TEAM. WE ARE WE ARE OFFICIALLY THE LONGEST SERVING NBC REPORTER PHOTOGRAPHER TEAM RIGHT THERE. ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. WE ARE VERY EXCITED TO BE DOING THIS AGAIN. NO, YOU KNOW WHAT? BE SHARING ALL THESE STORIES BACK TO HOME. YEAH. AS OBLIVIOUS AS I CAN BE AT TIMES. MY FAVORITE STORY IS THAT BABY IN THAT PICTURE IS NOW 20 YEARS OLD. AND YOU SAID YOU SAID, HEY, SON, I’LL SEE YOU IN ABOUT A MONTH AND A HALF OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT. AND HE GOES, WHERE ARE YOU GOING? I’M LIKE, REALLY? THAT IS A TRUE STORY. THAT WAS JUST LAST WEEK. I’M LIKE, OH, M G, TOTALLY HAVE A GOOD TIME. YOU GUYS BE SAFE. AND PART OF THE CYCLE OF LIFE AS YOU DO THESE THINGS. YEAH, ABSOLUTELY. SEE YOU. DEIRDRE. DID DID ANYONE SEE YOU FROM THE LAWN? DID ANYONE ASK YOU? HEY, AREN’T YOU SUPPOSED TO BE ON TV RIGHT NOW? SHOULDN’T YOU BE AT THE STUDIO? NO, NO ONE DID. BUT I’LL TELL YOU THE QUESTION I DID GET THIS MORNING DOWN AT THE CHECK IN, SOMEBODY SAW MY SWEATSHIRT AND ASKED ME IF I WAS A WINTER OLYMPIAN. AND I’M LIKE, THIS IS A GREAT DAY. MULTIPLE TIMES. THERE ARE WORSE THINGS TO BE MISTAKEN. I WILL TAKE IT. ALL RIGHT, GUYS, BE SAFE, SAFE TRAVELS. WE LOOK FORWARD TO SEEING YOU LIVE FROM ITALY. SEE YOU SOON, FRIENDS. ALL RIGHT. WATCH US ON SOCIAL. BECAUSE, AS YOU KNOW, I AM BASICALLY HIS PERSONAL DOCUMENTARIAN. SO I WILL BE SHARING EVERYTHING THAT HE DOES FOR THE NEXT THREE AND A HALF WEEKS. SOUNDS GOOD. SOUNDS SO GOOD. I ENCOURAGE HIM TO AS WELL MAKE GOOD CHOICES. FABULOUS FINAL WORDS I LOVE IT. ALL RIGHT. THANKS GUYS. AND KCRA 3’S LIVE COVERAGE FROM MILAN STARTS NEXT FRIDAY. OF COURSE WITH THE OPENING CEREMONY. BUT BEFORE THE FIRST COMPETITIONS YOU CAN CATCH UP WITH YOUR FAVORITE ATHLETES RIGHT NOW ON KCRA.COM/OLYMPICS. I LOVE TO SEE TOMMY AND DEIRDRE OUT THERE. THEY ARE. THEY HAVE IT DIALED IN. YE
