SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — The outlook is sunny for surfers in San Diego.

A high surf advisory is in effect in San Diego coastal areas until Sunday morning, with sets reaching up to 10 feet on Saturday, according to the National Weather Service.

NWS also issued a high rip current risk warning throughout the weekend, which means life threatening rip currents are likely.

San Diego Lifeguards and NWS advise staying out of the water if you are not an experienced swimmer.

However, San Diego is home to many advanced swimmers and surfers who dream of swells like this one. Some lineups in San Diego have been crowded since early Saturday morning, and the conditions are promising for advanced surfers through sundown.

According to Surfline, a popular surf forecasting service used by surfers across the world, waves reached 12 feet at Blacks Beach and 10 feet at Windansea on Saturday morning.

Surfline reports clean, “good” conditions at several San Diego Beaches throughout Saturday, which isn’t regular in the area. Clean conditions are created by a combination of wind, swell and tides.

This is a West/West-northwest swell, which indicates that the waves are coming from that direction. In addition to Blacks and Windansea, breaks that typically work well with this swell direction include the Sunset Cliffs reef breaks and Ocean Beach.

Inexperienced swimmers can enjoy the waves from the beach. San Diegans commonly crowd the sand to admire the waves and experienced surfers during high surf advisories, safely watching from a distance.
