What constitutes a “speed lump” as opposed to its “speed hump,” “speed table” and “undulation” counterparts, according to Sacramento?

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Sacramento City Council approved last week 90 more lovely little “lumps” to slow drivers and reduce crashes across 24 streets.

Construction on the road ridges is expected to begin soon. Here’s what constitutes a “speed lump” as opposed to its “speed hump,” “speed table” and “undulation” counterparts, according to the city of Sacramento:

Speed lump: A 12-foot-long asphalt mound between 3¼ and 3¾ inches high. It has gaps that allow larger vehicles such as fire trucks and buses to pass through with less impact, making them suitable for emergency and bus routes.

Speed hump: A 12-foot-long asphalt mound between 3 and 4 inches high that is similar in both shape and size to a speed lump but extends fully across a road with no gaps. These are no longer installed nor will they be found on emergency or bus routes in Sacramento.

Speed table: A 22-foot-long, flat-topped hump that creates a raised section of road that can double as a pedestrian crossing.

Undulation: A series of two or more speed humps placed close together. These are no longer installed in Sacramento.

Sacramento does not use the term “speed bump,” the city said. There is no specific reason; the program transitioned from “humps” to “lumps,” with “bumps” not being a term officials used.

The 90 new speed lumps will cost Sacramento over half a million dollars, and funds come from the Vision Zero safety program.

Speed lumps are approved through the city’s public works department, which reviews community applications and maintains a backlog due to limited annual installations per district, ABC10 previously reported.
