The San Diego State and UC San Diego women’s basketball teams won Saturday afternoon to protect their one-game conference leads.

Guard Makayla Rose scored 28 points and had nine steals to lead the Tritons to a 59-46 victory over Hawaii at LionTree Arena. UCSD scored a fifth straight Big West Conference win to improve to 17-6 overall and 12-1 in Big West Conference play.

San Diego State never trailed as it rebounded from its only Mountain West loss, posting an 81-52 victory at San Jose State.

Four Aztecs finished in double figures as San Diego State (18-4, 12-1) maintained a one-game lead over UNLV in the standings.

Forward Kennedy Lee led the Aztecs with 16 points. Guards Naomi Panganiban and Nat Martinez had 13 and 12 points, respectively. Forward Bailey Barnhard had 11 points and a team-leading six rebounds.

The Aztecs opened the game on a 13-1 run and shot 54.2% (32 for 59) for the game while holding the Spartans (3-21, 1-12) to 37.5% (21-for-56). San Diego State shot 60% (18 for 30) in the second half. The Aztecs also had a 36-29 edge in rebounds and forced San Jose State into 14 turnovers.

“We’ve been the standard in the league through the first half of the season, and we wanted to get back to that,” said Aztecs coach Stacie Terry-Hutson, whose Aztecs saw their 13-game winning streak end Wednesday in a 57-44 loss at Grand Canyon. “We did a good job of that today as our bench stepped up.”

The Aztecs played without starting guard Nala Williams.

Rose, a 5-foot-7 senior, had season highs in points and steals for UCSD Saturday while playing every minute of the game for the ninth time this season. She went 10 for 16 from the field, hitting all three of her 3-point attempts.

Six-four junior center Erin Condron had 12 points, five rebounds, three blocks and two steals. Guard Rosa Smith scored 10 points. Guard Dymonique Maxie had five points, five rebounds and six assists. And guard Sabrina Ma had four points and a team-leading six rebounds.

UCSD forced 19 turnovers and had 11 steals. The Tritons had an 18-4 advantage in points off turnovers and a 16-4 edge in fast-break points. The five UCSD starters played an average of 35 ½ minutes.

USD triumphs

Sophomore forward Eva Ruse and freshman guard Olivia Owens had 20 points apiece Saturday afternoon as the University of San Diego  (9-17, 3-10) defeated Seattle 71-54 in a West Coast Conference game at the Jenny Craig Pavilion.

The 6-foot-2 Ruse, a product of British Columbia, had 18 rebounds, three blocked shots and two steals to go with her 20 points.

The 5-foot-10 Owens had 13 rebounds and seven assists.

USD dominated the boards by a 63-22 margin that included a 43-2 rebounding edge on Seattle’s end of the floor. Seattle (5-19, 1-12) shot 29% (18 for 62) from the floor.
