TEMPE, Ariz. – No. 19-ranked San Deigo State water polo opened the ASU Invitational outscoring its opponents 39-9 in two games as it rolled to victories of 21-1 and 18-8 at Mona Plummer Aquatic Center on Saturday over Cal Lutheran and UC Santa Barbara, respectively.

For the day, Sydney Gish led the Aztecs (7-4) with seven goals and passed the 100-career goal milestone.  Sammi Byers, Poppy Phillips and Claudia Valdes each bent the net five times, Lucy Bullock and Mimi Stoupas had three goals, while Hannah Bell and Julianne Stark each scored twice. Natalia Barrot, Mackenzie Dollander, Ioanna Petiki, Megan Holcomb, Shannon Murphy and Avery Sullivan tallied a goal apiece.

In the cage, Mandy Lagerlof started both contests, played in the first half of each game and earned two wins. She totaled eight saves and made five steals. Tiaare Ahovelo totaled 15 saves playing both second halves.

The Aztec jumped out to a 3-0 lead on goals by Stoupas, Valdes and Gish in the first 1:24 of the game, before the Regals scored at the 4:52 mark. The Aztecs added four more strikes before the end of the period from Bullock, Byers, Bell and Phillips.

In each of the remaining three quarters, SDSU held Cal Lutheran off the scoreboard while scoring 14 times.

Phillips scored three more times while Bullock, Byers and Gish each bent the net two more times. Barrot, Bell, Dolander, Petiki and Valdes each scored once in the remaining 24 minutes.

Lagerlof earned the win with two saves in 16 minutes to run her record to 5-2 on the season.

San Diego State surrendered the first goal of the game, at the 5:12 mark, but then ripped off six consecutive goals to lead 6-1 after eight minutes. Valdes scored three times, while Gish, Byers and Murphy each bent the net once.

In the second period, the Scarlet and Black got strikes from Gish and Stark and took an 8-2 lead into the intermission after UCSB scored the final goal of the half.

The Gauchos trimmed their deficit to 8-3 midway through the third before Phillips pushed it back to a six-goal game, 9-3. UCSB cut the lead to five, 9-4, but that was as close as it got as SDSU’s Stoupas and Holcomb’s goals made it 11-4 after 24 minutes.

In the fourth quarter, the Aztecs kept UC Santa Barbara at bay, not letting them get any closer than seven goals in the 18-8 win.

Lagerlof made six stops in the first half to improve her record to 6-2 on the year.
