Former Georgia Bulldogs quarterback Stetson Bennett has been named as a cut candidate for the Los Angeles Rams. Bennett is entering the fourth and final year of his rookie contract with the Rams. He has not appeared in a NFL game yet, but he’s had some promising performances in the preseason.

Bennett is hardly the Rams’ most important former Georgia quarterback this offseason. The Rams are hoping that starter Matthew Stafford will return for another season. Stafford performed at an MVP level for Los Angeles and helped the Rams make the NFC championship. Despite a nearly flawless performance from Stafford, the Rams lost to the Seattle Seahawks with a chance to make the Super Bowl.

Bennett is the Rams’ third-string quarterback behind Jimmy Garoppolo, who is set to become a free agent in March. The Rams could elect to roll with Bennett as their back up or run it back with the far more experienced Garoppolo.

Cameron DeSilva of Rams Wire highlights why the Rams could move on from Bennett.

Bennett was strictly the No. 3 quarterback this past season and now enters the final year of his rookie contract in 2026. Cutting him would net the Rams a savings of $1.1 million, which isn’t much but if they only keep two quarterbacks, cutting him makes sense.

Bennett is a factor in the Rams’ quarterback room, but we would not expect him to compete for a starting role in the event Stafford retires. Los Angeles has two first-round picks in the 2026 NFL draft, so this is viewed as their opportunity to acquire a quarterback. However, this quarterback class is thin and the Rams may not trust a quarterback beyond the expected No. 1 pick Fernando Mendoza.

The Rams would not save a ton of money if they cut Bennett, but it could be enough for them to consider the move. Los Angeles has $46.7 million in cap space this offseason. They are not in a bad financial spot thanks to excellent drafting over the years. We would not be surprised if the Rams are really aggressive to surround Matthew Stafford with talent as his NFL career winds down.
