A pedestrian who was reportedly walking in freeway traffic lanes died after he was struck by two vehicles Wednesday night near Balboa Park, California Highway Patrol officials said.

The incident occurred when the man was struck by a northbound Chrysler Voyager on Interstate 5 near the Sixth Avenue off-ramp around 9:25 p.m., CHP officer Kimberly Gonzalez said. The man was then hit by a Jeep.

The pedestrian died at the scene, Gonzalez said. His name was not released pending notification of his family.

The Chrysler’s driver stayed to speak with investigators, while the Jeep fled, Gonzalez said.

Investigators are waiting on the results of a toxicology report to determine if the pedestrian was under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time of the crash.

Investigators asked anyone with information about the crash or the Jeep’s driver to contact the CHP San Diego area office at 858-293-6000.
