Overview: Sobremesa
The menu has rocked the La Mesa food scene with cuisine inspired by our neighbors to the south in Mexico, as well as South and Central America.
“The team (from Aromi and Carbonara’s restaurants) knows Sicilian cuisine and wanted to be challenged and grow in their culinary world, “ said bar manager and investor Rhamsses Santiago.
The welcoming and warm decor is desert-inspired with burnt oranges, beige, and browns.
“Sobremesa is a special word that captures a precise, delicate, and deeply human moment that begins when the meal ends, yet no one leaves the table. People linger, wine moves more slowly, voices soften, and conversation becomes the true centerpiece of the evening.” – from the Sobremesa menu cover.
After a whirlwind few months of planning, Sobremesa opened in December 2025 with Latin-inspired cuisine.
The menu has rocked the Lake Murray and East County food scene with cuisine influenced by flavors from Mexico, as well as South and Central America.
The dishes include many ingredients that might be new to even experienced diners.
For example, with appetizers, try a rich queso fundido, which has sweet corn and huitlacoche succotash. If you’re not familiar with huitlacoche, it is a corn fungus that is considered a delicacy in Mexico, sometimes referred to as Mexican truffle. The queso is sauteed with corn, onions and garlic and blended with cheese. Also in this dish are queso oaxaqueno and chile Fresno.
If you’d like to try a unique guacamole, the guacamole de guadalupe is made with crispy lentils and chickpeas, purslane (an edible “weed”), zahtar (a popular Middle Eastern spice blend) and crispy tortilla chips.
And then there’s the tacos and tostadas. The menu features eight different versions, available in both vegetarian and meat-based options.
The restaurant also offers shared plates, such as camarón zarandeado, which is garlic-marinated shrimp with refried beans, panela cheese and butter rice. Another enticing shared plate is pescado a la talla, which is seared branzino (European sea bass) with garlic and chile adobo, blistered shishitos and arugula.
Save room for dessert, either familiar or exotic.
If you’re looking for something new, consider the pastel de elote asado, a charred corn with crème anglaise in macerated blueberries and ice cream. For the familiar, try the chocolate abuelita sundae. Grandma’s ice cream sundae features a chocolate pot de crème, chocolate streusel, crème fraîche ice cream and caramel espuma (foam).
The welcoming and warm decor is desert-inspired with burnt oranges, beige and browns. There are touches of earthiness with dried palm fronds and dried pampas grass wall decor.
