POINT LOMA – As league seasons have arrived, athletes in winter sports at Point Loma High are striving to achieve goals, including bringing home league championships.
Boys basketball
After an 11-3 start, the team carries a 2-4 record in Eastern League play, including wins over La Jolla and University City. The regular season ends on Feb. 12 with the Pointers rated seventh among local Div. II teams. Senior Na’Sean Hardy (12.8) and junior Jax Marple (10.5) lead in per-game scoring, while Hardy also leads in rebounds (7.0) and steals (2.1). Freshman Leo Romanofsky (6 feet 4 inches tall) has been a surprise with 7.3 points, 5.2 rebounds and 1.5 steals per game.
Girls basketball
The girls are 12-10 overall, but in first place (4-1) in the Central League. Only Kearny has a league win over the Pointers, who had a chance for revenge earlier this week when they met the Komets in a home game. Sophomore River Hargett leads in scoring (10.1 per game) while junior Hannah Smith is the top rebounder (8.7), and junior Eva Cruz (3.3) leads in steals per game.Â
Boys soccer
The defending CIF Div. I Â champions are 2-6-6 overall and 1-4-2 in the Western League, having scored 10 goals to date while giving up 22. The league win was at rival Cathedral Catholic when junior Hansel Munoz scored with an assist from junior Gustavo Matancillas. The leading scorer is senior Bryce Caffo (3 goals), with senior Kamil Vasquez close behind (2 goals, 1 assist). This team often peaks during the playoffs and is ranked 12th in Div. I.
Girls soccer
The girls are 9-3-2 overall and sit in third place with a Western League record of 1-2-2. Their league win was a 2-1 road match against Coronado. Junior Sophia Valli leads the team in goals (6) and assists (4) for 16 points. The leading goalkeeper is senior Maya Powell with 39 saves and an .800 goals against average. The team is ranked ninth in Div. I.
Girls water polo
The team sits at 4-12 overall and in third place (1-3) in the six-team Eastern League. The regular season ended on Feb. 5 with the team ranked 15th in Div. II.
