ROSEMONT, Ill. – The Drake softball team capped opening weekend of the 2026 season with a win over the Oakland Golden Grizzlies, 3-1, on Sunday. The Bulldogs had a successful three days at the Rosemont Dome Tournament winning four of five contests.

The Bulldogs were on the board first as Pearson Hall provided a triple in the second at-bat of the game. She scored one batter later with her teammate Malea Yoxsimer knocking her in on a hard-hit single.

Drake added its second run of the game in the top of the second. Following a leadoff walk drawn by Ava Husak, Natalee Watts put the Bulldogs in scoring position as she roped a double to right field. In the next at-bat Frankie Rita laid down a squeeze play bunt attempt which allowed Husak to race home.

Oakland was able to get a run back in the third with a base hit up the middle, but the biggest hit of the game came in the top of the sixth. Watts stepped into the box and provided the winning blow with a solo shot to left center. Watts’ homer was her second of the weekend after she recorded an inside the park home run on Saturday.

The pitching trio for Drake of Jayme Scheck, Brooklyn Cardenas, and Peyton Driscoll got the job done in the circle and held the Golden Grizzlies, who exploded for 22 runs in their first two games, to just a single run and six hits on the day.

Scheck, who got the start, was credited with the win following her three innings of work. Cardenas also went three innings and allowed two hits, while Driscoll shut the door and earned the save tossing one inning with one hit allowed and one strikeout.

The Bulldogs will head out to Arizona for their next tournament, the Bear Down Fiesta, Feb. 12-14. Drake will begin the tournament on Thursday, Feb. 12 against host institution No. 18 Arizona. First pitch against the Wildcats is scheduled for 6 p.m. CT.
