Brown, who is credited as the sole writer of the Sacramento band’s hit song, “The Distance,” founded Cake in 1991 with several others.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Greg Brown, a founding guitarist of the Sacramento band Cake, has died after a brief illness, the band announced Saturday via social media.

“It is with heavy hearts that we share the news of Greg Brown’s passing after a brief illness,” the band wrote in its post. “Greg was an integral part of CAKE’s early sound and development. His creative contributions were immense, and his presence—both musical and personal—will be deeply missed. Godspeed, Greg.”

Brown and several others founded Cake, a rock band, circa 1991 in Sacramento, according to his fellow founding member and trumpeter Vince DiFiore.

“Greg was a great friend, and always brimming with interesting and perfect musical choices,” DiFiore said Sunday. “He was an excellent father to his children.”

Brown stepped away from the band at the end of 1997 after it toured the album, “Fashion Nugget,” DiFiore said.

While Brown has not been an official member of the band for 29 years, those who make up Cake will play Channel 24 from March 21-23 while on tour.

On Apple Music, Brown is credited as the sole writer of Cake’s hit song, “The Distance.”
