STANFORD – Head Coach Steve Singleton of the California softball team earned his first career win Sunday defeating San Jose State 1-0 at the Stanford Softball Stadium. The Golden Bears ended the Stanford Invitational with a 7-2 loss to No. 18 Stanford.
Â
After splitting the doubleheader Cal ended opening weekend with a 1-4 record. The Spartans left The Farm 1-4 and the Cardinal sit at a perfect 5-0.
Â
Game 1: Cal 1, SJSU 0
The first win of the 2026 season and the Singleton era came on the back of tremendous pitching and defense. Freshman pitcher Mya McGowan earned her third start of the weekend and the first win of her collegiate career tossing a complete game shutout. The righty scattered four hits and two walks to go with two strikeouts.
Â
Huge plays were made in both the infield and the outfield to pick up the first-year pitcher when Spartans were on the bags. The infield stabbed several lineouts including an unassisted double play in the top of the second inning by second baseman Emma Jackson. The outfield gems were highlighted by a relay home from left field to get a Spartan out at the plate in the top of the fifth inning and a home run robbery in center field by Kayli Counts in the top of the seventh.
Â
The game’s lone run came in the bottom of the sixth inning when designated player Kyndal Todd added to her already impressive opening weekend with an RBI sac-fly in a two-strike count. She ended the tournament with three hits, two home runs, three runs and five RBI.
Â
Game 2: No. 18 Stanford 7, Cal 2
The Cardinal capped off its home-opening weekend in its new stadium by taking the final game of the tournament 7-2. The home team posted a four-spot in the bottom of the first inning, added two more in the third and scored a single run in the fifth thanks to an 11-hit outing. It was the fourth time this weekend Stanford eclipsed 10 hits.
Â
Tamya Waiters was a bright spot for the Bears tossing four solid innings and allowing just one earned run on five hits to go with three strikeouts.
Â
Cal spoiled the Stanford shutout in the top of the seventh inning scoring its first run of the game on a bases-loaded wild pitch followed by an RBI single from Kayli Counts that cut the final lead to 2-1.
Â
Next on the schedule for the Bears is another five-game weekend at a Bay Area school as they head to Santa Clara’s Silicon Valley Classic. Cal will face Utah, the host Broncos, UC Santa Barbara, and Illinois State.
