Oakland police said they arrested a shooting suspect who assaulted an officer while fleeing the scene early Sunday.

Officers heard gunfire when they were in the Uptown district around 4 a.m. and found a victim on the ground on the 500 block of 17th Street near Telegraph Avenue, according to the Oakland Police Department. Paramedics took the victim to a local hospital, where he was listed in critical but stable condition.

During the investigation, officers learned that the victim was in a fight with another person when the shooter opened fire before fleeing on foot, police said. An officer was assaulted by a person fleeing the scene, and the suspect was placed under arrest for the shooting, police said.
