The 5th Annual California Days will roll into Calico Ghost Town in Yermo on Valentine’s Day weekend.

The event, on Feb. 14 and 15, will focus on the lives of the historic mining settlers in Calico, which includes their contributions through silver and borate mineral mining.

The weekend will include family games and activities, such as pony rides, gunfighter shows by the Calico Mountain Volunteers, historic reenactments, educational displays on the Pony Express, the state flag and the Butterfield Overland Trail.

Visitors can even bring their furry friends and enter the popular “Dorsey Doggie: scavenger hunt to win a prize. There will also be a live burro corral to see how miners transported silver and borate through the hills near Barstow.

There will be live music performances by The Storytellers, The Blue Henrys, and Holy Crow Jazz Band. Calico favorites like the High-D Boys, Orange Town Revival, Mojave County Band and Blacksmith Boys will also perform.

Other entertainment will include the Victorian Muse Theatre/Guns of Cajon Pass and classroom reenactment sessions from the 1880s at the schoolhouse, as well as some Wild West street skits performed by the “Scoundrels Alley” Calico troupe, Pico Pistolero.

The Calico Print newspaper will also be running a Valentine’s Day scavenger hunt on Sunday. Free copies will be available in the Calico House Restaurant.

The event is sponsored by Apollo Silver Corp., Mitsubishi Cement Corporation and Equinox Gold, who will be on-site with regional mining displays and information materials related to mineral uses in modern consumer products.

This event coincides with National California Day every Feb. 22, founded in 2017 by National Day Calendar to celebrate California as the 31st state to join the Union.

Dates, times, prices

Calico will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Prices are $10 per adult, $5 children ages 4 to 11, and children 3 years and under are free.
