Guamanian restaurant Prubechu is nestled in the Mission and serves Chamorro food — a rarity in San Francisco and the wider Bay Area. Chef Shawn Naputi and business partner Shawn Camacho opened Prubechu in 2014 with a tasting menu, but in 2019 they moved addresses and switched to a family-style format with an a la carte menu.
All occasions. The spacious, heated patio is a no-brainer for groups, which Prubechu easily serves and accommodates, without breaking a sweat (It’s designed for family-style service, after all). It also works as a meal for two, and all will enjoy the live music that lights up the backyard at night, as experienced on a recent weekday night. (Hearing “The Most Beautiful Girl in the Room,” performed on acoustic guitar will always make me pause and laugh during dinner, no matter what.) It altogether makes for a pleasant eating experience.
If you’re feeling lost, the kitchen offers a Fiesta Table ($96 per person), a tasting menu of dishes put together by Naputi. It’s a great way to get a taste of Chamorro cuisine and take the guesswork out of ordering.
