It has been a big weekend in sports with the Super Bowl in Santa Clara and the Winter Olympics in Milan. But these events have also been the site of activism and political speech, from conservative backlash to a halftime show by Puerto Rican superstar Bad Bunny, to U.S. athletes voicing their support for marginalized communities and mixed opinions about representing the country on a global stage. Lou Matz, Professor of Philosophy at University of the Pacific joins Insight to talk about the long history of protest and politics in sports.
License Restrictions Impacting CA’s Sikh Truck
Drivers California’s trucking industry is undergoing big changes under the Trump Administration. Last year, an executive order from President Trump created new regulations for certain immigrants who operate large vehicles. In reporting from our partners at CalMatters, in response to the threat of withholding federal highway funding, California’s DMV rescinded commercial licenses for thousands of drivers – a number that could grow in the tens of thousands in the coming years. Roughly a third of the state’s commercial drivers are believed to be Sikh, members of a religious minority from India. Many of whom are citizens who voted for Trump. Gagandeep Singh is an investigative journalist based in Sacramento and shares his reporting about the Sikh trucking community in the Sacramento and Central Valley.
Sacramento Zoo’s New CEO
Last year, the Sacramento Zoo decided to cancel plans to build a new zoo in Elk Grove, instead opting to try and expand their footprint in their historic Land Park location. Along with the new plan comes new leadership. Dan Simon was appointed as the new CEO of the Sac Zoo at the tail end of last year. He takes the helm as the Zoo looks to its next chapter and is just a year out from its 100 year anniversary. Dan Simon joined us to talk about his vision for the zoo and its future.
