Oakland police said Monday afternoon that they were attempting to contact a person who may have run inside a home on Summit Street with a gun, prompting the evacuation of nearby residents.
A shooting was reported around 10:30 a.m. on Summit Street near 28th Street in the Pill Hill neighborhood. When officers showed up, they tried to talk to “an individual who may have barricaded themselves inside a residence with a firearm,” the Oakland Police Department said in a statement.

The department did not say whether anyone was injured.
Officers secured the area and evacuated residents, the department said.
“Officers are continuing to attempt to communicate with the individual,” the department said Monday afternoon.
Police urged the public to avoid the area.
