Aztec pentathlete Jenna Fee Feyerabend, the 4×400 relay team and a trio of pole vaulters paced San Diego State’s strong showing at the Wolf Pack Classic indoor track meet last weekend in Reno.
Feyerabend, Mountain West’s reigning indoor pentathlon champion, won four of five events en route to a personal best of 4,270 points and a 206-point victory.
The senior claimed wins in the 60-meter hurdles (8.64 seconds), the shot put (48 feet, 9.03 inches) and long jump (19 feet, 4.67 inches); tied for first in the high jump (5 feet, 6.14 inches); and finished fourth in the 800-meter run (2 minutes, 22.31 seconds).
The 1,600-meter relay team of sophomore Lariagh Allen, freshmen Kwelia Bentham and Shari Hurdman and junior Lidia Major won in the time of 3:37.75 — the fourth-fastest time in Aztec history. Aztecs Isabella Nilsen (senior; 13 feet, 9.35 inches), Peyton Bedrosian (sophomore; 12 feet, 7.96 inches) and Jordan Leveque (junior; 12 feet, 7.96 inches) finished 1-2-3 in the pole vault. Hurdman (55.12 seconds), Major (55.37), Bentham (55.43) and sophomore Takiyah Blue (55.65) ran 1-2-3-4 in the “B” 400-meter dash.
Senior Xiamara Young (19-11.37) won the long jump. Sophomore Alyssa Alumbres (39 feet-4.44 inches) placed second in the triple jump. Junior Aji Mbye finished fourth in both the 60-meter dash (7.45 seconds) and 200-meter dash (23.74).
Danielle Patrick of Cal State San Marcos recorded the second-best pole vault in program history (11-8.15), while Alyssa Jones posted the fifth-best high jump (5-2.20) in Cougars history.
Division II basketball
Point Loma Nazarene University men’s and women’s teams are in Hawaii for three games this week that could decide their PacWest Conference fates.
The Sea Lions play Chaminade, Hawaii Pacific and Hawaii Hilo in doubleheaders Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. Hawaii Pacific trails PLNU (17-4, 12-3) by 1 ½ games in the men’s standings; Chaminade is fifth. PLNU’s women are 16-5 overall and 12-3 in league play, good for second in the standings.
• Keavie Lovie (San Diego City College) scored 18 points with seven rebounds and Nate Simon scored 18 points as CSUSM’s men (11-10, 8-8) snapped a three-game losing streak Saturday with a 86-74 home win over Cal State San Bernardino.
JC basketball
With two weeks to go in the regular season, the San Diego City College men (19-5, 12-0) and MiraCosta College women (24-0, 8-0) continue to lead the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference standings.
Softball
Jillian Albayati has been named the California Collegiate Athletic Association Player of the Week for the second straight week in leading 14th-ranked CSUSM (8-1) to victory in the Division II West Coast Challenge.
Through nine games, the senior shortstop has gone 17-for-28 (.607) with three doubles, four home runs, 18 RBIs, 12 runs and a 1.799 OPS. Outfielder Czar Fleischman is hitting .370 with three homers and 12 RBIs for CSUSM.
• San Diego State catcher Jade Ignacio was named the Mountain West Player of the Week after leading the Aztecs to three wins at the SDSU Kickoff. Ignacio went 7-for-11 with two doubles, a home run, three RBIs and three runs for SDSU (3-1).
• UC San Diego is off to a 4-1 start after the La Jolla Invitational. Sophomore Marley Espiau hit .571 (8-for-14) with three doubles, a triple, a home run and eight RBIs in the tournament.
• USD posted a 3-2 record at the UC Davis Tournament.
• Alexis Huey (Poway High) already has two home runs and eight RBIs for perennial state community college power Palomar College, which is off to a 4-0 start.
• Mesa College is off to a 5-1 start and Southwestern College is 5-2. Sophomore outfielder Olivia Anderson is hitting .591 with a home run and nine RBIs for Mesa. Iliana Romero (Bayfront Charter) is hitting .500 (13-for-26) with a homer and two RBIs for Southwestern, while Jacqui De Murguia (Olympian High) is 11-for-25 with a home run and six RBIs.
Baseball
Junior outfielder Jacob Embleton (Granite Hills High School) has a home run, seven RBIs and nine runs scored for CSUSM (7-1).
• Point Loma Nazarene is off to a 4-3 start.
• Southwestern College is off to a 6-0 start while Palomar College is 6-1. Freshmen Elijah Stephens (Sage Creek High School; two home runs, eight RBIs) and Preston Conklin (Patrick Henry High School; 10 RBIs, 10 walks) are off to fast starts for Palomar.
Tennis
USD’s men’s tennis team is 6-1 and ranked 11th in the country after winning three straight matches at the Hogan Tennis Center. Oliver Tarvet has a 6-1 record and is ranked the No. 38 singles player in the nation.
• The San Diego State women’s team is off to a 3-1 start.
• The Point Loma Nazarene women are 17th in the NCAA Division II rankings. Senior Alina Kupfer is ranked 13th among the nation’s singles players and junior Anna Pallencaoe (Patrick Henry High School) is 29th. The doubles team of Pallencaoe and Emely Valencia Andrejeva is ranked 24th.
Women’s water polo
San Diego State’s 19th-ranked women’s water polo team (7-6) went 2-2 at the Arizona State Invitational. Mimi Stoupas leads the Aztecs with 30 goals on the season, while Sydney Gish has 15 goals and 13 assists.
