BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — The city of Bakersfield is saying no more to the motel that was home to frequent and numerous fires over the past year.
The Bakersfield City Council is set to approve an agreement with Abateco Incorporated to remove and dispose of materials containing asbestos at the La Mirage Hotel at 525 Union Ave., according to the agenda for the Wednesday meeting.

The removal is estimated to cost $267,300, the proposed agreement read.
Asbestos removal is the first part of a two-part process to demolish the motel, the agenda said.
Once the material is removed, the site can be sent out for full demolition, city officials said. The demolition is expected to cost between $180,000 and $280,000.
The agreement says all asbestos-containing material should be disposed of within 90 days of the agreement being approved.
There is no set timeline for the demolition at this time.
La Mirage has been the site of over 20 fire incidents since January of 2025, according to the Bakersfield Fire Department. It was also on the list of active demolition cases in Bakersfield.

Bakersfield Code Enforcement evicted the residents staying at the motel in April of 2025 due to health and structural concerns. A string of fires has burned at the vacant structure since then.
The City Council is scheduled to consider this agreement during its meeting at 5:15 p.m. in the Council Chambers at 1501 Truxtun Ave.
