SACRAMENTO, Calif. —

Leaders and community members from Southern California, including Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass and Councilwoman Traci Park, were at the State Capitol on Monday, advocating for more support after last year’s deadly Palisades fire.

The group, still feeling the impact of the fire, spent the day meeting with representatives from the Department of Insurance and Gov. Gavin Newsom’s Office to discuss rebuilding efforts.

Mayor Bass said the biggest hurdle in Palisades is dealing with insurance companies reluctant to pay what people need.

“We just want the industry to do what the industry is supposed to do, which is if you’ve had a policy for years and years and you’ve paid into that policy when you need it, you expect for that company to pay. And I think that’s the challenges that the homeowners, the renters are facing. We want the insurance companies to do what they are set up to do,” Bass said.

Councilwoman Park also spoke, emphasizing that the recovery shouldn’t be worse than the disaster itself.
