The San Francisco 49ers on Monday received some scary news on recently-acquired defensive end Keion White.

According to reports, White was shot in the ankle in downtown San Francisco and suffered a non-life threatening injury. He was not believed to be part of the altercation that led to the shooting, and is undergoing surgery at a local hospital per the Athletic’s Matt Barrows.

Barrows also posted statements from the 49ers and the San Francisco Police Department.

Via Barrows:

From the 49ers: “Keion White was a victim of a shooting and sustained a bullet wound to his ankle this morning in San Francisco. He is currently undergoing surgery at a local hospital. We will provide further updates when appropriate.”

From SFPD: “A preliminary investigation revealed a verbal altercation occurred between two groups inside a business.  The victim was injured when shots were fired by an unknown suspect.”

White was a trade deadline acquisition by the 49ers when they dealt a sixth-round pick to the New England Patriots. He posted 12 tackles, two tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks in nine games with San Francisco. The 2023 second-round pick is entering the final year of his rookie contract in 2026.

This is the second time in three years a 49ers player has been the victim of a shooting in San Francisco. Wide receiver Ricky Pearsall was shot through the chest a week before the 2024 regular season began. He wound up missing the first six weeks of the regular season.

It’s unclear what White’s timeline for his return is. The 49ers are currently away for the offseason and won’t be back at their team facility until sometime in mid-April for Phase One of the offseason program.
