SAN DIEGO — The Sacramento State women’s golf team started its spring season with rounds of 287-299 at the San Diego State Classic on Monday at The Heights CC. The Hornets are 10-over par as a team and are tied for sixth place.
Sacramento State had a strong first round led by a pair of 70s from Ella Kraft and Florencia Dufey. Kraft started on the fifth hole and was never above par during the round with birdies on Nos. 7, 11, 17 and 1 and bogeys on Nos. 8 and 3. Dufey was 2-over through her first three holes before working her way into red numbers with birdies on the par-3 12th, par-5 13th and par-3 16th. A birdie on the par-5 second momentarily moved her to 3-under before a bogey on No. 3.
Sophia Lee shot 73 and Darla May Dela Torre recorded a 74 to give the team a total of 1-under par in the round. Lee had four birdies, three bogeys and a double bogey in her round while Dela Torre had three birdies and five bogeys.
The Hornets fought their way through the second round where Lee paced the team at even par. The freshman had two birdies and three bogeys over her first five holes and then caught fire with birdies on Nos. 18, 2 and 4 to get to 2-under. However, bogeys on the par-4 fifth and eighth returned her to even.
Kraft shot 73 in the second round and is tied for eighth place for the best standing on the team. Kraft bogeyed her first hole of the round (No. 5) before a run of 11-straight pars. A bogey on the par-5 17th stopped that stretch but was equalized by a birdie on the par-5 second.
Tova Hatton shot 74 and Dufey had an 80 to give the team a score of 11-over in the round. Hatton rallied late in her round with birdies on her last two holes. Dufey had a birdie, three bogeys and three double bogeys.
Cal State Fullerton used a 13-under par first round to open a commanding 9-stroke lead in the team standings. UC Irvine is second at 2-over while Santa Clara, Oregon State and UC Davis are tied for third at 9-over.
