Valentine’s Day is coming up, and a timely study has revealed that the Golden State is one of the “best” in America for those looking for love.

WalletHub researchers compared all 50 states across 29 different metrics to come up with their ranking of single-friendly states. Their metrics were divided into three categories: dating opportunities, dating economics and romance and fun.

“Beyond your looks, personality, interests and career, where you live can play a major role in your chances of finding a romantic partner, [and] while everyone values different things when it comes to dating, some places naturally make it easier to meet and connect with others,” WalletHub said.

So where did California land on the list? The answer is fourth, behind Florida, New York and Texas.

Finishing with a total score of 63.69 out of 100, California finished atop the dating opportunities field and third in the romance and fun rank; however, when it came to dating economics – such as food and drink prices, costs of going out, median credit score and employment rates, among others – the Golden State was not so golden, finishing dead last.

You can see how California ranked in WalletHub’s “best” states for singles study below:

Percentage of single adults: 9th

Online dating opportunities: 3rd

Restaurants per capita: 1st

Movie theaters per capita: 1st

Average beer and wine price: 5th

“In states with a lower cost of living, your paycheck can go further, allowing for cheaper or more frequent dates, which is especially appealing amid ongoing inflation.” WalletHub said. “On the other hand, those who are more financially secure may prefer states packed with attractions that make for more memorable and unique date experiences. Dating is also a numbers game, and living in a state with a larger share of single adults can significantly boost your odds.”

Now, you might be thinking, what is the “worst” state for singles in America? Well, according to WalletHub, that would be West Virginia, which finished 35th in dating economics, 45th in romance and fun and 48th in dating opportunities.
