SAN JOSE, Calif. – Five people were shot late Sunday near San Pedro Square in downtown San Jose, just hours after the Super Bowl ended, and after the area had hosted a watch party, authorities said.

Shooting near San Pedro Square hours after Super Bowl party

What we know

The San Pedro Square area had been hosting the San Pedro Fan Fest, a free community block party, earlier in the day that ran until 8 p.m. Police said the shooting was reported around 10:50 p.m. near the intersection of North Market Street and West Santa Clara Street.

Video from the scene showed the entrance to San Pedro Square blocked off with police vehicles and caution tape.

Additional red tape was visible, and several people appeared to be interviewed in front of La Victoria Taqueria. An ambulance was also seen pulling up in front of the restaurant.

San Jose police said the four men and one woman were shot and transported to hospitals with varying gunshot wounds. As of the latest update, all five victims were expected to survive.

Police described the shooting as an isolated incident and said it was preceded by an altercation.

It’s unclear what led to the shooting.

Police asking for witness video

The San Jose Police Department is asking anyone who was in the area Sunday night and has video of the scene to come forward.

“We do believe because the amount of people that were downtown last night there is significant video evidence that could be shared with us,” said Sgt. Jorge Garibay. “The public has been very helpful in the past and we’re asking them to do the same thing.”

Earlier shooting, arrest made

Two shot, killed earlier in the day

Earlier in the day, at about 2:20 a.m., two men were shot in the 100 block of Paseo de San Antonio, and both died at the scene, police said.

In that case, police also called the homicides an “isolated incident.”

These were the city’s second and third homicides of 2026.

At a news conference Tuesday, police said an arrest had been made in the double homicide, but they did not elaborate or identify the suspect or suspects.

San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan took the podium to say that it’s impossible to always prevent crimes from happening, but he credited police for their swift arrest.

He indicated that the shootings were inspired by people drinking too much and “making bad decisions,” and emphasized the rest of the Super Bowl festivities were peaceful and joyous.

“On behalf of our community, and particularly on behalf of the victims of this violence and their families, deeply disappointed that some people chose to make very bad decisions and there will be consequences,” Mahan said.

Residents feeling uneasy

Some nearby residents are unnerved by the violence.

“It’s pretty scary. I’d rather it not be happening near where I live, right in that building.” said Jackson, motioning to the apartment where he lives on South 4th St. & Paseo de San Antonio. “Things tend to get a little rowdy and there were a lot of people in town for the super bowl, that aren’t normally here. And maybe a little bit more excited than usual.”

Mayor Mahan defended the police response to both crimes and the overall safety of the Bay Area’s largest city, which saw an influx of visitors for Super Bowl LX.

“San Jose is the safest big city in the country. I’m not in any way excusing what happened. I think some individuals made very bad decisions and there will be accountability. But I can’t be held to the standard of preventing all crime,” he said.

San Jose police are searching for the suspect in the shooting on Paseo de San Antonio. Investigators encouraged anyone with cell phone video of the crime to submit that video to the police department via Silicon Valley Crime Stoppers.
