UKIAH, CA., 2/10/26 – Ukiah police arrested an Oakland man on suspicion of attempted murder over the weekend for allegedly attacking his two elderly friends with a skateboard at their North Oak Street home.
On Saturday at about 7:30 p.m., 37-year-old Clarence Wells of Oakland called Ukiah police to report that his friends, a 75-year-old man and a 72-year-old woman, weren’t breathing and needed medical attention, according to police officials.
Wells allegedly said he didn’t know what happened to the pair and reported that there was a gun in the house but he didn’t know where it was.
Officers were sent to the house, surrounded it, and used a loudspeaker to order anyone inside to come out, police officials said in a news release Monday.
When they didn’t get a response, officers entered the home to find Wells laying on the floor “awaiting UPD arrival,” according to police.
Officers also found the victims with serious wounds to their heads.
Police believe that Wells, who was temporarily staying with the couple, hit them repeatedly with a skateboard following an argument.
Both victims were taken by ambulance to the hospital and both were later flown out of the county for treatment and were likely in stable condition, police said.
Police don’t yet know the motive for the attack or what the argument was about.
Wells was booked into the Mendocino County Jail on suspicion of attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon and causing injury likely to cause death to an elder adult.
His bail is set at $1 million.
