A community is in mourning after a beloved woman described as “free spirited, full of life and super friendly” was killed in a hit-and-run crash in Long Beach over the weekend.
The collision occurred at the intersection of Redondo Avenue and East 2nd Street at approximately 4:48 p.m. on Feb. 7, the Long Beach Police Department confirmed.
Arriving first responders located an adult female bicyclist and a bystander who was rendering aid. The bicyclist was taken to a hospital where she succumbed to her injuries, LBPD said.
“The preliminary investigation indicates that the bicyclist was travelling southbound on Redondo Avenue when she entered the intersection with East 2nd Street [while] a 2025 gray Hyundai Sonata was traveling westbound on East 2nd Street,” Long Beach police explained in a media release. “The Hyundai Sonata entered the intersection with Redondo Avenue at a high rate of speed…did not stop at the stop sign and collided into the bicyclist.”

The driver of the Sonata then fled the scene without stopping to render aid and identify themselves as required by law. They were last seen traveling west on East 2nd Street from Redondo Avenue.

Authorities did not immediately identify the woman by name; however, loved ones who spoke with KTLA identified her as Lori Ann Carreon.
One man who knew Carreon, Bruce Hartzell, said she was struck as she was biking home from work and that the force of the collision sent her flying 60 feet through the air, causing her to land on a parked car. The bystander referenced by police was a nurse who saw the incident and administered CPR, Hartzell told KTLA in an email.
He lamented on the fact that there have already been multiple fatal traffic crashes this year in Long Beach and expressed concern that 2nd Street itself is becoming “a raceway.”
“2nd Street itself has become a raceway with drivers leaving the local bars and speeding up it or down Redondo Avenue,” he said. “There have been multiple accidents.”

Loved ones and neighbors gathered at the site of the crash Tuesday morning and erected a memorial in Carreon’s honor. One of her friends, Mindee Meadows, said she will never forget the tragic day.

“Nobody in this neighborhood will forget what they heard and what they saw…even if you weren’t here that day,” she told KTLA 5’s Kimberly Cheng. “She was such an amazing person that this loss is going to be felt for miles in terms of family and friends. She was an occupational therapist who dedicated her life to helping children and adults, so their lives are impacted as well.”
“This entire neighborhood is heartbroken,” she added.
Another friend, Melinda Duran, said biking was one of Carreon’s favorite hobbies.

“She was a beautiful person…very fun-loving, free spirited, full of life, super friendly,” Duran said. “She loved this community, she loved being outdoors, and biking was an avid love of hers.”
