ELMONT, NEW YORK – John Klingberg was able to remain on the ice for the entirety of the San Jose Sharks’ morning skate on Tuesday.

While he won’t play against the New York Islanders, the Sharks defenseman took a step in the right direction for a return from a lower-body injury. Klingberg tried to skate during practice on Sunday, but got off the ice.

San Jose Sharks coach Ryan Warsofsky said he hasn’t gotten an official update on the defenseman’s status.

Before leaving California, the Sharks placed Shakir Mukhamadullin on injured reserve and called up Luca Cagnoni. Like Klingberg, Cagnoni won’t play on Tuesday.

There is also a question as to whether he will even get into a game during the four-game road swing. Warsofsky said it all depends on Klingberg’s health.

“I think more so if Klingy is gonna be out longer, we need someone for the power play,” Warsofsky said of Cagnoni. “We’ll focus on today and then worry about that tomorrow.”

There is an argument to be made that Cagnoni is the San Jose Sharks’ best puck-moving defenseman. Yes, he’s not the biggest, but he’s got the skating and hockey IQ to be an effective player.

Cagnoni was caught off guard by the Sharks’ recall, but he’s excited to be with the team.

“I thought I did what I could at training camp and in the preseason games. I showed what I could do, so I was pretty happy with that,” Cagnoni told SHD. “It’s nice to be back up here with the guys.”

Cagnoni made his NHL Debut last season and appeared in six games. Cagnoni, understandably, wasn’t happy about not making the San Jose Sharks’ opening night roster, but he took it in stride.

“It’s a positive. Obviously, [it] sucks getting sent down, but you get positives out of it,” Cagnoni said. “I thought, just go to the AHL and just work as hard as I can. Still improve the little details and really soak it in, because it’s still really good hockey down there. [There is] a lot to learn, so just make the best of it.”

Cagnoni skated with Timothy Liljegren at practice on Sunday and again at the morning skate on Monday. Liljegren is on IR with an upper-body injury and is eligible to return on Friday.
