San Diego FC’s inaugural “community kit” was almost entirely white, a blank canvas to be worn as the franchise navigated its inaugural season in Major League Soccer.

The uniforms SDFC will wear in Year 2 are … not that.

SDFC unveiled its “Unprecedented Unity” kit on Tuesday. The look incorporates Jackson Pollock-esque splashes of orange and royal blue, a departure from last season’s navy-and-white color palette. The club will wear royal blue shorts with the new jersey, another first. The SDFC badge is also royal blue and white.

Orange isn’t an entirely new color for SDFC, which sports what it calls azul and chrome in its team crest and throughout its primary uniform. The team’s primary (navy) jersey has a gradient orange stripe on the back.

As for “Unprecedented Unity”? SDFC says the name is a nod to “how SDFC transcends boundaries and unites, especially in a region so closely connected to Tijuana.” A logo just above players’ last name reads “Sin Fronteras,” meaning “without borders.” The jocktag at the bottom of the jersey features the initials “SDTJ,” highlighting the two cities; the lettering was designed by binational artist Alexis Samano. Jerseys are available for purchase online or at SDFC’s Mission Valley team store.

San Diego FC takes 4-1 lead to Mexico City and 7,500 feet in Concacaf Champions Cup

SDFC senior vice president of brand Sebastian Morua said the theme is inspired in part by “what will be a special year for the sport in our region”: this summer’s World Cup held throughout North America.

“Football is the global game. It needs no translation and transcends all borders,” he said. “It’s a game for everyone, everywhere — and no city lives that more fully than San Diego.”

SDFC is in Mexico City for Tuesday’s second leg of the first round of the Concacaf Champions Cup. SDFC beat Liga MX’s Pumas UNAM 4-1 in last week’s opener at Snapdragon Stadium.
