A 40-year-old man died after suffering a medical emergency while in custody at the Sacramento County Main Jail downtown, sheriff’s officials announced.

Deputies found the inmate suffering from “what appeared to be a seizure” about 6 p.m. Friday, according to a Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office news release late Monday. Sacramento Fire Department personnel transported him to a hospital.

The man underwent surgery Sunday but was pronounced dead later that night, deputies said. The Sacramento County Coroner’s Office identified the man as Eric Lee Rosenberg of Sacramento.

The Sheriff’s Office said it would conduct a full inmate death investigation in accordance with department procedures and state law.

The death marked the second in-custody death reported this year at the Main Jail. A 62-year-old man died Jan. 14 after suffering a medical emergency inside the facility, sheriff’s officials previously said. That inmate was later identified by the Coroner’s Office as Donnell Cox.

Since January 2021, 41 people have died while in custody at the Sacramento County Main Jail, according to data compiled by The Sacramento Bee.
