Five Los Angeles Kings will be part of the historic moment at the Milan Cortina Olympics when NHL players return to the competition for the first time in 12 years.
Men’s hockey opened play Wednesday with Finland taking on Slovakia and Sweden facing off against hosts Italy. The United States men’s team opens play Wednesday against Latvia.
The gold medal game is scheduled for Feb. 22. This Olympics is the first since 2014 to include NHL players.

Men’s hockey groups at the Milan Cortina Olympics
The competition format features 12 teams split into three groups.
Play starts with a round robin in each group. Each team will play three games with the group’s top teams and the best overall second-place team advancing to the quarterfinals. The other eight teams enter a qualification playoff to determine four remaining quarterfinal spots.
