EMERYVILLE, CA — The Bay Street Emeryville shopping center is turning into the East Bay’s Lunar New Year Party Central next week.

This year’s festivities will take place on Friday, Feb. 20, from 4 to 7 p.m. It’ll feature a variety of showcases and events, including dragon dancers, lion dancers and live calligraphy demonstrations.

UC Berkeley’s Calwushu club, which practices traditional Chinese martial arts with acrobatics, will also be in attendance to kick off “The Year Of the Horse.”

In Chinese astrology, the horse is confident, responsible, yet free. It encourages taking risks, traveling and pursuing goals.

“Symbolizing strength, freedom, and progress, this year is all about embracing new possibilities and bold momentum — and this celebration captures that spirit,” according to Bay Street’s Lunar New Year organizers.
