A teenager was shot by a friend while they were handling firearms at a family gathering on Super Bowl Sunday in Santee, sheriff’s officials said.

Deputies received a report around 7:30 p.m. of a shooting on Nate Way near Avanti Avenue, according to investigators. When deputies arrived, they learned a teenager had shot a friend while handling various firearms, including replica weapons.

The firearm involved in the incident was a .44-caliber cap and ball revolver, a black powder gun that uses a lead ball and percussion caps.

The teen was taken to a hospital with injuries not believed to be life-threatening, investigators said.
