FRESNO, Calif. (FOX26) — Teachers, classified school workers, and parents voiced their concerns during public comment at FUSD Board meeting to oppose proposed layoffs and job freezes.
Many classified school workers warned that the reductions would threaten classroom instruction, student transportation, and school safety.
Teachers and parents echoed those concerns, emphasizing that fully staffed schools are essential for maintaining quality education and supporting student success.
SEIU Local 521, the union representing many of the affected employees, urged the district to reject the cuts.
Union leaders argue that retaining staff is key to stabilizing campuses and preventing further enrollment decline, a concern the district itself has cited in justifying proposed reductions.
“We share a deep concern for our students and our schools, and we are united in our commitment to fight back against layoffs that will only push more workers out and further destabilize our district,” says Debbie Acosta, SEIU Local 521 Chapter President and FUSD Pool Operator.
